Jim Herrmann has been a hot name lately in the rumor mill. Adding fuel to the fire, recent Letter of Intent signee Jaleel Johnson took to Facebook and posted the following:
The Iowa hawkeyes will be gettin a new defensive coordinator….the LB coach from the NEW YORK GIANTS!!!!
(H/T: @HawkeyeExaminer for finding Johnson’s FB post.)
Update: Johnson posted a follow up on Facebook that he is not “100% sure who Iowa’s new DC is.” No big deal. He’s just getting excited about rumors like the rest of us.
Now, Johnson may just be reacting to message boards, Twitter or a variety of other places. Or he could have the real inside information. Either way…Jim Herrmann seems like a very likely candidate at this point.
Herrmann’s currently the linebacker coach for the World Champion New York Giants and perhaps more importantly was Michigan’s DC from 1997-2005. BHGP has a good summary of Herrmann’s career and some thoughts on the coach from Michigan fans. The reviews aren’t really glowing. Herrmann had a couple of good defenses and then a bunch of the mediocre variety. However, the man has won both a college National Championship (with Michigan in 1997) and a Super Bowl (um, yesterday). And that can’t be a bad thing.
Anyway. We should know for sure by Wednesday at the latest but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get official word before then.
